RIM BlackBerry Monaco Touch and Sedonda outed (leaked, leaks, tech, news, report, update, 2011)

Images and specifications for new hitherto unseen BlackBerry messaging phones have surfaced online, as it looks to build on the huge sales for the Torch and the warm critical reception afforded its latest operating system.

Unearthed by Crackberry, the Monaco Touch features a 3.7-inch touchscreen, plus 4GB of internal memory, a none too shabby five megapixel camera and a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm processor to keep everything ticking over smoothly.

And in line with the highest-end smartphones we’re seeing of late (CF: the Google Nexus S), it’ll also pack support for Near Field Communication (NFC) technology for contactless payments and tethering too.

Specs for the second leaked smartie, the BlackBerry Sedonda, are thinner on the ground. But we do know that it’ll also pack NFC support, plus A-GPS, an 800Mhz processor and all your standard connectivity options (think: Bluetooth and Wi-Fi).

UK availability and carriers for both handsets have yet to be confirmed. But they’re expected to drop around August or September this year.

Apple iPad 2: No microSD card support feature, according to insider (leaked, leaks, news, report, tech)

Speculation that the second-gen iPad will feature support for microSD cards is wide of the mark, it has been claimed.

Reports that the iPad 2 would offer expandable memory surfaced back in December, when leaked shots of cases for the device showed an opening in the upper left-hand corner.

An inside source whom AppleInsider “trusts on matters such as these” has rebuffed the suggestions, claiming that the slot is nothing of the sort. In fact, the slot is simply a new location for the iPad’s micro SIM tray, he says.

News of specs for Apple’s tablet comes as fellow iFansite 9to5Mac, claims to have got hold of an iPad 2 display from a Chinese third-party components maker. According to the site, the screen is lighter and up to 1mm thinner than the current-gen slate.

Other rumoured features for the tablet include dual cameras, a unibody design, more on board storage and a 2GHz processor to keep everything ticking over real nice, like.

Rumour: Nokia to join force with Microsoft Windoes Phone 7 on February 11th, 2011? Abby Technology Limited

Get your saltshakers ready kids. Word on the streets is that Nokia, the world’s biggest mobile corp. is set to do a deal with the devil, sorry, Microsoft, that it will announce this time next week.

Nokia boss Stephen Elop, who previously headed Microsoft’s business division before taking the helm at Espoo, is due to make the groundbreaking announcement at a press call in London on the 11th.

Carolina Milanesi, a Gartner analyst, said: “I don’t know if this is just wishful thinking, but it could definitely be the big announcement we are expecting.”

Wishful thinking or not, it was enough to cause Nokia shares to rise 1.5 per cent at the close of trading in Helsinki yesterday – an impressive bump of four per cent since news of the development first surfaced on Monday.

Nokia has been hinting for a while that it is considering “multiple ecosystem patterns”, which tech watchers interpreted, with good reason, as a potential, if limited, adoption of Android.

However, it seems the Finnish giant isn’t too keen on handing over the keys to smartphone supremacy to Google just yet and would rather chance it with Microsoft’s still-new Windows Phone 7 platform where it has a greater opportunity to dominate the lion's share of smartphone sales.

And from Microsoft's perspective at least, having major players like HTC, Samsung and LG already on board with WP7, and now catching the biggest fish in the pond of them all, right in brink of what seemed like an inevitable partnership with Google could seriously knock the wind out of Android’s sails.

Of course, it’s still possible that Nokia could yet adopt Android at a later date and the alliance with Microsoft is still just a rumour. Watch this space like a hawk for more information next Friday.

Top ten (10) Apple iPhone 4 Apps for January 2011

2010 was a banner 12 months for the App Store, with even more top-grossing and record-breaking apps than any previous year. Can 2011 top it, though? Here are our top ten apps and games from January that might just help Apple’s download market pull it off.

1. British Library: Treasures

British Library: Treasures is a virtual collection of some of the most revered artifacts known to man, as well as great works from the likes of Leonardo Da Vinci and Charles Dickens.

Dig in and you’ll find over 100 highlights from around the globe, from the oldest world’s oldest Bible to an original Magna Carta of 1215, all sorted in categories spanning literature to science. There’s even room for an evolving English section for all you fans of Dream of the Rood and its ilk.

Items are accompanied by over 250 high-resolution images, plus 40 videos with expert commentary to school even the most learned history buffs.

For an outlay of just £2.39, you’re looking at an app of rare quality. Make sure you don’t miss this.

2. Tube Alarm

Tube Alarm, if the name didn’t make sufficiently clear, is an alarm app like any other, except better.

Why better, I hear you ask? Okay, I can’t, but that’s not the point.

It has all the standard features of an alarm clock – recurring alarms, snooze, even an LED display. But its USP is that it also comes with the ability to wake you up early in case there’s trouble brewin’ on your normal travel route in the morning.

And it does this not by witchcraft, as some would allege, but by allowing you to select up to three underground lines that you most frequently travel on, which the app can then use to automatically pull live status updates from the official Transport for London (TFL) feed. If there’s a minor or major disturbance in the morning, the alarm will simply go off early depending on your settings.

Better yet, you can also set it up to play your favourite wake-up music. Just don’t expect it to make your breakfast too.

3. PlayStation Official App

Love PlayStation? Of course you do. And with the official PlayStation app for iPhone, you can love the big P even more.

But let’s clarify first that this does not play games, nor does it do your laundry. What it does is give you instant access to your PlayStation Network (PSN) profile, including all your bling, aka trophies, coz you know your street cred is at stake without em’.

And you can also do things like catch up on the latest news in gaming and browse every PS3 title released to-date, including downloadable ones. But best of all is that you can see what your chums are playing, so that you can decide whether it’s worth rushing home to get involved or not.

4. Hysteria Project 2

Video games, at least in the last decade, have frequently straddled the fine line between ‘game’ and ‘movie’. While games have become increasingly better at telling stories and immersing players in the world in which that story is set, a rare and dying breed of games try to do it the old-fashioned way: through the use of ‘full motion video’. Or more accurately, live action footage.

Hysteria Project 2 is one of them. Because instead of placing you in a hand-drawn or computer generated world, the entire setting of this “game” is shot on film. You’re able to move about in it and interact with it to make sense of what the hell is going on. In this case, you wake up tied to a bed in a mental institution and your goal is the same as any crazy person: escape.

It’s not a game in the traditional sense, but more of an interactive movie where your input is required to keep the story moving forward. You won’t understand fully until you’ve tried it and for the sheer weirdness alone we recommend that you do. Better still, check out the trailer.

5. Bubble Ball

A confession: this one actually came out two days before we bid adieu to 2010. But we felt it still deserved inclusion in our first round-up for the New Year. Not just for the fact it was made by a 14 year old, but because it is actually very well done, too.

Bubble Ball is a simple, but truly enjoyable physics-based puzzle game that involves getting a ball to travel across a level to a finishing point, marked by a flag.

Your goal is to strategically place a bunch of shapes – rectangles, triangles and what have you – that the game generates for you in each level, so that the ball can safely reach its destination. If you’ve played titles like Crayon Physics and Line Rider, you’ll be right at home here. And although the concept is basic, it’s a title even Sir Isaac Newton would have been proud of.

6. Dead Space

Dead Space, for those unfamiliar with the series, is a survival horror title, set in space. Aye, space – the final frontier for life on earth. Except it’s full of dead things. Murderous, stabby dead things to boot, called Necromorphs that want to shred you to pieces for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and sometimes supper.

Set somewhere, sometime after the events of the original Dead Space on consoles, the iPhone edition takes players on a brand new freight fest with its own little story that sets the sets the scene for Dead Space 2.

To help you make it through this rough part of the galactic neighhourhood, you’ll be armed with some badass weaponry, including the iOS exclusives Plasma Saw and Core Extractor. The former shouldn’t require much elaboration. The latter though, we won’t spoil as discovering it is one of the joys of the game.

Pick up Dead Space now for just £3.99 from iTunes and get ready to scream like the little girl you really are.

7. Bandwidth Pro

Ever wondered how much bandwidth you’re hogging while you’re watching those countless YouTube clips, surfing the web and downloading apps, games and music on your iPhone?

Your contract might say ‘unlimited’ internet. But that is only half the story as your carrier will almost always cap your download speed when you’ve reached a certain bandwidth threshold, or worse, suspend your account until you’ve seen the error of your ways.

Or maybe you have a capped download limit to begin with, which could lead to extortionate bills if you’re not careful.

Enter Bandwidth Pro: an app that tells you exactly how much data you’ve used. Even more helpfully, it also lets you set a limit for yourself and see your usage in real time so you can be more sensible about the way you make the most of your plan.

It’s that simple and for an investment of just £1.19, you’re looking at potentially saving hundreds over the course of your contract.

8. Legendary Wars

Legendary Wars is not an easy game to describe. That’s chiefly because of the dizzying amount of variety it throws at you that can be a little overwhelming coming from an iPhone title. But if we were forced to try and put it in a nutshell, we’d call it an action, real-time strategy, role-playing game - all rolled into one beautiful package with gorgeously rendered cel-shaded graphics. Snappy, eh?

You take on the role of a heroic knight named Lucas and his army of elves, golems, wizards and unicorns in a quest to stave off scores monstrous creatures of the Netherworld approaching Legendaria. We’re talking undead skeletons, zombies, vampires, werewolves, trolls, gargoyles, dragons, the lot.

The gameplay is almost entirely in a side-scrolling perspective, with mission types that involve attacking enemy forces, defending castles – all in real-time while you build your forces, give commands and manage resources.

It’s the genre-spanning variety alone that makes Legendary Wars a worthy recommendation. And for a price of just £1.79, it’s hard not to.

9. Tap DJ

Fancy yourself as a DJ, but lack the resources or the musical knowhow? Fret not. Tap DJ brings together in virtual form all the necessary components of DJ-ing, from turntables to mixers, right on your iPhone, so you can finally satisfy that unfulfilled urge to scratch and beat match whenever, wherever you feel like it.

It packs an incredible array of options, with a ton of samples to get you started, plus the ability to add your own music from the integrated iPod library. You can also tune, scratch, equalise, throw in effects, cue points and loops to come up with complex pieces of music with little very experience.

Whether you’re a professional DJ or just a fan of music, Tap DJ is a brilliant and incredibly cheap way to get creative on the move.

10. BEP360

BEP360 is a 3D Augmented Reality (AR) app from none other than the Black Eyed Peas that lets you, virtually at least, become a part of the hit ‘The Time (Dirty Bit)’ music video in full 360 view.

Like most AR apps, it uses the iPhone’s camera and gyro sensors to give you the illusion that there’s something in front you when there isn’t. But what sets it apart is how well it’s implemented. In addition to dancing with chicks that aren’t really there, you can take part in a virtual photo shoot with your chums and the Peas. That’s a boon if like us you lack the Hollywood player creds to get you past the virtual velvet rope.

If you love BEP, it’s a must-have. Even if you don’t, it’s still a damn cool app to show off to people, and by that I mean lord over your Android-toting mates. Nothing gets those Fandroids more ticked off than being shut out of all the cool parties, even the virtual ones.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread bug enables remote access to files! (tech, news, report, update, smartphones)

If you thought you had seen the last of Android Gingerbread’s security vulnerabilities, you are mistaken. A critical bug has been ‘re-discovered’ that enables remote viewing of your files.

Xuxian Jiang, a researcher the University of North Carolina stateside, came across a bug that was originally exposed last year on Android 2.2, AKA Froyo, by security expert Thomas Cannon, but was supposedly patched. It revealed a serious flaw in the stock Android browser that allowed hackers to remotely gain access to files stored in the handset’s SD card.

Jiang has found a way to bypass Google’s patch on none-other-than the latest iteration of Android, Gingerbread, and has already notified Google of the issue with the necessary code to reproduce the hole. The Android team has responded swiftly to look into the problem with an “ultimate fix”. However, the latest discovery deals another embarrassing blow to the search giant, which has only just patched an equally embarrassing SMS bug that sent text messages to the wrong recipients.

Fortunately for Google, security specialists have been the first to uncover the majority of the bugs, but the risk remains very real if the exploits were to fall into the wrong hands.

Google has yet to confirm when this “ultimate fix” will arrive, so in the meantime we advise that you pay close attention to the URL of any website you browse.

LG Optimus 3D coming to 3 Network and Vodafone - Abby Technology Limited, Mobile Phone Repair

LG’s upcoming Optimus 3D Android smartphone will go on sale on 3 and Vodafone when it hits the UK, we have learned.

According to tech hounds at Mobile Smug, the Optimus 3D, which is currently in the running for the title of the world’s first Android 3D smartphone, will launch on UK networks 3 and Vodafone. However, the all-important release date and pricing details are still the unknown and neither Vodafone nor 3 has officially announced plans regarding the handset yet.

LG is due to officially unveil the much-hyped smartie next week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Last week the South Korean electronics giant released a teaser trailer with eye-popping newspaper headlines and grammar that left us in a tizzy.

LG has good reason to be excited, though. The Optimus 3D packs quite a punch when it comes to hardware credentials, with specs that include a four-inch glasses-free 3D display with a 1080p output, a dual core 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor, an eight-megapixel snapper with autofocus, stereoscopic support and geo tagging. It also runs the latest iteration of Android, version 2.3, i.e. Gingerbread, out of the box so there's no need to wait around for an eternity for a software update.

Watch this space for more information regarding the Optimus 3D very soon.

Leaked: Branded Android phone HTC denied by Facebook! Abby Technology - Android Phone Repair

Facebook has rubbished claims of a branded handset reportedly being developed by Taiwanese smartphone giant HTC.

Rumours of the widely hyped ‘Facebook phone’ have been doing the rounds lately, but the social networking site has been quick to quash the latest gossip with an official statement to the press.

Dan Rose, head of business development with Facebook, said: "The rumours around there being something more to this HTC device are overblown.”

Business daily City AM recently claimed that the phone by HTC “will run on a tweaked version of Google’s Android operating system and will prominently display users’ Facebook messages and news feed on the home screen”.

However, Facebook would have none of the speculation and clarified the handset’s status once and for all.

“This is really just another example of a manufacturer who has taken our public APIs and integrated them into their device in an interesting way”, Rose added.

Asked if the phone would be Facebook branded, Rose replied with a categorical “No”.

Talk of the Facebook phone first emerged with the INQ Cloud Touch, which makes use of Facebook features on the phone’s home screen but is not branded. We are still baffled why a phone needs to be slapped with a Facebook logo at all.

Top 10 Reasons why PlayStation Suite makes Android a gaming winner?

The dawn of PlayStation Suite for Android marks a huge turning point for gaming on Google’s OS. At last, we’re not only getting a third-party app store that matters, but also one that’ll put phones using the Big G’s software bang up against the iPhone and its dominant position in the world of mobile gaming. Here’s our Top 10 reasons why Sony’s store will make Android the go-to OS for gamers.

1 It’s “hardware neutral”

Essentially, this means it’ll work on any Android phone running 2.3 or higher, whether they come with physical controls or touchscreens. That means games won’t be built with just one device in mind, so gamers can essentially own whichever Google phone they like and still play nice.

2 PlayStation titles

Sony says that classic PSOne titles will be up for grabs when PlayStation Suite launches later this year. That immediately makes this a more hardcore proposition than the iPhone, with the chance to reminisce over some seriously classy games.

3 It’ll be available on the NGP, AKA PSP 2

The Next Generation Portable might not be a phone, but the Suite’s position on the device means devs creating new games will be striving to build games for punters on a full-on gaming platform as well as one based on a mobile phone. That should mean the quality is high.

4 It’s being monitored

One of the key complaints about Android Market is its lack of approval process. Not so PlayStation Suite, which Sony says will have a ‘Certified’ programme to ensure titles are up to snuff. Google could certainly learn something here from the Big S.

5 It’s not just for phones

That “hardware neutral” factor again. Sony says “tablet PCs” will work with PlayStation Suite, all meaning Honeycomb tablets will be able to get a slice of the gaming action and take the iPad on at its own game.

6 There’s money to be made

Sony has said one of its key concerns with its Android games store is helping devs “expand their business opportunities”. Put simply, that means it wants to make them money. With Google admitting that devs are struggling to cash in via Android Market, perhaps PlayStation Suite is a smarter, more lucrative alternative.

7 Exclusive games

Sony-backed games are more likely to find their way onto PlayStation Suite than onto the App Store. That means you’ll only be able to snag certain titles using Android, immediately putting Apple at a disadvantage.

8 No looking back to old versions of Android

The fact Sony is opting to put this on Gingerbread or higher shows it’s aware of the damage of trying to bring this to older devices that won’t be able to hack the pace of resource heavy games. PlayStation Suite pushes Android further towards the top tier of smartphones.

9 It gives Android the gaming impetus pre-MWC

All the gaming talk at MWC will focus on PlayStation Suite and how it works on the forthcoming Xperia Play (aka the PlayStation Phone). Without it, gaming would not be a big factor at the world’s biggest mobile show.

10 Utilising bigger screens

Android phones’ larger screen real estate is prime for gaming content, so blowers with panels of 4-inches will be perfect for the PlayStation Suite. The iPhone’s smaller number will have t get bigger this summer if it wants to compete.

Samsung Galaxsy S2 Android Contender trailed in two epic videos

Official promo clips for the Samsung Galaxy S2 Android powered smartphone have surfaced online, ahead of its official launch at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC).
Posted on the Samsung Unpacked site, the videos reveal scant details about what the handset offers. But that’s not too much of a loss given that we’re already pretty au fait with the dual core processor and Android 2.3-packing Galaxy S2’s spec sheet thanks to some high-profile leaks.
As seems to be de rigeur in the ad world these days, both clips have a stirring soundtrack that recalls Icelandic post-rock pixies Sigur Ros, along with portentous statements and shots of the phone bathed in a yellow glow that makes us think of the mysterious contents of the case from Pulp Fiction.
Sammy is set to unwrap its flagship handset for 2011 on February 13th at a press event on the eve of the MWC – along with a number of new additions to the Galaxy family, including a successor to the Galaxy Tab slate.
Rumoured specs for the successor to the best-selling Samsung Galaxy include a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen, an eight-megapixel snapper with video recording in lovely 1080 HD and Near Field Communication support for Oyster card-style contactless payments.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X12 Arch landing in April on 02,UK.

The latest member of Sony Ericsson’s Xperia family, the X12 Arc, is set to hit store shelves in the UK in April on O2.

Just last week we reported a product listing o f the Arc on Play.com, which is offering the handset on preorder from April 1st. Now a holding page on the O2 website has also put the release date for the Arc as ‘Coming Soon: April’, giving smartfans a real hope for a spring release.

The Arc was unveiled earlier this month at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas and undeniably sports some of the smartest specs yet to feature on a SE handset.

Among these are a super-slim body that measures just 8.7 mm and boasts some slick curvature, which lends the phone its name, a massive 4.2-inch ‘Reality display’ touchscreen with Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine, an eight-megapixel snapper with HD recording skills and Exmor R sensor for low light snapping, an HDMI port to stream clips directly to an HDTV and up to 32GB of memory via the onboard microSD slot.

More importantly, it will run Android 2.3, AKA Gingerbread, out of the box, so there’ll be no dilly-dallying with updates whenever it ships.

Sony Ericsson is due to hold its own special event in London on February 16th while its rivals tries to impress at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. Along with the Arc, we expect the smartphone maker to officially unveil the no-longer-a-secret Xperia Play.
